Tories to build on Greenbelt
The Times, 09/02/06. The Conservative Party abandoned their traditional defence of the green belt yesterday and promised a programme of house building for first-time buyers. In a speech that ignored most of last year's election manifesto, George Osbourne, the Shadow Chancellor, said he would change the tax regime, planning system and supply of public housing to increase the number of affordable homes. As he addressed delegates at a housing industry conference in the South Wales, Mr Osbourne referred to the fact that only 37% of households could afford to buy their own home today, compared with 46% in the late 1980's.
